Our animals are raised humanely
At a minimum, farm animals deserve adequate space, access to the outdoors, clean water and air, the opportunity to express their natural
behaviors, and healthful feed. Animals raised on pasture or free range are generally healthier and under less stress than those raised in confinement.
This is the case with our livestock at the Homestead Farm and Ranch. They have widely varied diets that depend on the grasses and other forage available in the area. They roam freely and express natural behaviors like rooting and scratching.
Our animals always have access to clean water and fresh air, and we supplement their diets with vitamins and minerals. We also make sure there is adequate shelter, whether trees or a formal structure, to protect livestock from the elements.
Our beef is 100% grass-fed, grass-finished, and pasture-raised.
“Grass-fed” animals live their early lives on pasture, but may have been sent to a feedlot for the last few months of their lives (this part of the rearing process is referred to as “finishing”). In contrast, "100% grass-fed or grass-finished" tells you that the animal lived her entire life on pasture, which is the case with our animals.
In addition, hormones are commonly used to speed up growth in beef production, and their use by the beef industry is associated with significant animal welfare problems.
Higher-welfare beef isn’t only better for cows, it’s better for you. Beef raised on pasture contains more vitamin E, more beta-carotene, and 25 – 50% less fat than intensively-reared beef.
